For example, you can share your FaceTime calls beyond Apple’s walled garden, to anything with a web browser. While I might not be a FaceTime regular, I can appreciate the upgrades in iOS 15. I would have appreciated the ability to SharePlay from say, Apple TV+, and then put in the details of whoever I wanted to share with once I’d picked something - That order would make more sense. There is potential here, I just wish this feature weren't joined at the hip to FaceTime. There are some third-party fitness apps (including SmartGym), but nothing hugely notable. There’s currently no YouTube or Netflix, but Apple has managed to rope in TikTok, HBO Max, Hulu, Showtime, Paramount Plus, and the NBA. Unfortunately, your favorite streaming service may not work on SharePlay. Sometimes it’d pick up ambient noise, like distant door slams, but it was cool to be able to hear that someone else was sweating (and swearing) along with me, while still being in the privacy of my apartment.

The app did an excellent job dipping out the Fitness Plus audio when my companion talked. Of course, you’ll need an Apple Watch to participate, but it’s a fun way to share a workout, and have someone to complain along with you.

There are also a few games compatible with SharePlay, but you’ll probably tend toward the free-to-play options, like the charades-based game, Heads-Up. When shows offer multiple subtitles and audio options, everyone can listen/read in their chosen languages.

It’s a little tight on an iPhone, but works well on Apple TV and iPads. A picture-in-picture box offers a view of all the callers. Shared shows and content are impressively lag-free and can be navigated by anyone watching, so your friends can pause a TV show if they need to make a snack run. They will then see a pop-up, asking them to join you. Then, once connected to someone, you can open a supported app and you'll see an alert at the top of the screen asking if you want to stream your content to your FaceTime contact. Apple wants developers to integrate SharePlay without glitches, and so plans to make the screensharing feature available in later versions.You need to start a FaceTime call before doing anything SharePlay. The delay may be caused due to development issues for third-party applications. In their notice, the company says, “ We appreciate how many teams have been hard at work building SharePlay experiences and to ensure there is no interruption in your development, we have provided a SharePlay Development Profile which will enable successful creation and reception of GroupSessions via the Group Activities API.” However, Apple has offered developers a separate development profile for SharePlay. The company has also confirmed SharePlay won’t be part of the initial public release. The Cupertino company has since disabled the feature in the sixth beta release. In the beginning, Apple had included the SharePlay feature in the beta versions of iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS 15. The feature lets a user share their screen, music, and Apple TV content on FaceTime. Amongst all the features the company highlighted, Apple SharePlay quickly became one of the highly-anticipated features.

And now, in an update to its developers, the company has announced that Apple’s upcoming software updates will initially not offer the Apple SharePlay feature many were looking forward to.ĭuring the 2021 WWDC event, Apple had given us a glimpse into the future of its operating systems. The tech giant will be releasing public versions of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, tvOS 15, watchOS 8, and macOS Monterey, along with a new iPhone series, this fall. We’re expecting the next big operating system revamps from Apple later in September this year.
